CAMP LONG RANGE PLANNING
The following plan contains some of the hopes and dreams for Saukenauk Scout Reservation.
Please keep in mind that these ideas and concepts are under development, and have not all been approved by the Council Camping Committee or the Council Executive Board. If approved, we will need to address the issue of funding, consider the needs of the council, and comply with rules and regulations of the Boy Scouts of America.
If you would like to help with any camp project, please call the local scout office for a referral to the local Camp Committee Chair.

Strategic Plan Study
January 4, 2005
The following Strategic Plan Study is an attempt to plan for the future of Saukenauk Scout Reservation. While some of the plan incorporates high capital expenditures it also reflects the futuristic thinking of the committee as it pertains to not just keeping current operation in its fine condition but to develop the camp to serve the needs of future campers. Saukenauk has been a cornerstone of this council for 50 years and will continue to be a most valuable asset to youth development and the scouting program.
3 Year Target Goals 2005-2007
- The cook's cabin needs to be completely renovated or replaced with a new structure which would also permit an additional rental site during the off season. If an outside food vendor is contracted then this goal would need to be revisited.
- Develop and add two new program areas for summer camp usage.
- Explore the reopening of the Zip Line to summer camp operation subject to National Standards.
- Renovate the swim area by sloping the beach, build a retaining wall between the road and swim area, create additional water run-off diversion from roadway and build a permanent post and fence around the swim area.
- Provide the main side of camp and ranger residence with the rural public water supply.
- Replace the outdated water heaters in the main side shower house with more energy saving inline water heaters.
- Build an entry porch over the eastside entrance door to the Polar Bear Cabin.
- Purchase a commercial riding mower to lower range time spent on mowing.
- Acquire new power tools for maintenance operations and refurbish the shop area.
- Complete replacement of windows and casements in the Polar Bear Cabin and Winter Cabin.
- Complete a Timber Study Analysis of the entire camp.
- Complete a Lake Study Analysis as it pertains to sedimentation, potential dredging and the continuous lotus problem.
- Create and produce more advertising brochures about Saukenauk Scout Reservation and do periodic updates for the council website.
- Review the potential of placing insulation and installing a ceiling in the Health Lodge.
- Actively pursue grants, funding sources of all types and increase the Saukenauk Capital Development Fund.
5 Year Target Goals 2005-2009
- Enlarge the quartermaster storage area on the main side of camp.
- Resurface the Jambo side parking lot and enlarge the area with gravel.
- Total renovation of the rifle range facilities is needed.
- Develop the shotgun range with a small structure, concrete pads for shooters and permanent fencing.
- Restructure use of the Jambo side of camp with additional building for program use ie, cub resident facilities, volunteer training and additional storage.
- Purchase a newer model camp truck and secure a backhoe for camp maintenance.
- Build a new nature shelter at the road diversion going to ridge 1 and the lake road. Convert the current shelter into the T-2-1 program area.
- Continue to actively pursue grants, funding sources of all types and increase the Saukenauk Capital Development Fund.
10 Year Target Goals 2005-2014
- All camper tents placed on moveable platforms and all staff tents on concrete pads.
- Complete the current policy of having metal roofs on all buildings.
- Oil and Chip the main side access road to the Trading Post and update roads to the interior campsites.
- Construct a conference training center with residence facilities which would also be used for outside rentals for businesses and elder hostels.
- Purchase additional surrounding land that affects sediment run-off into the lake and allows for future expansion and development.
- Continue to pursue grants, funding sources of all types and increase the Saukenauk Capital Development Fund.
