WELCOME, GARY & PAULA MERTZ!

Dear Scouters,

My Scouting years started in Cub Scouts in Hutchinson , Kansas with Pack 303 chartered by Holy Cross Catholic Church. I didn't realize until several years later that working at summer camps to earn money for college would lead to a lifetime commitment to the mission and ideals of the Boy Scouts of America.

Starting out as a District Executive with the Grand Columbia Council, headquartered in Yakima, Washington, served as the foundation for my professional Scouting experience. My career

tookoff and sent me back to Kansas for six years where I served as a District Director, then to Dayton, Ohio, as the Finance Director. Following Ohio I found myself in Santa Fe, New Mexico as the District Director, serving three districts, one of which included the Philmont Scout Ranch. After Santa Fe, we landed in Belleville, Illinois, as the Assistant Scout Executive where I've served for the past three and a half years. I'm a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and graduated from W-04-94 Woodbadge class as an Antelope.

My wife, Paula, and I have been married 24 years. We have been blessed with an amazing, very smart and adorable eight-year-old son, Andrew Steven, and enjoy the company of our Cairn terrier puppy, Forest. Paula is a physical education teacher in Andy's school and has been active as the track, soccer, and speech coach. We have enjoyed serving in different positions for Andy's Cub Scout Pack. We enjoy hunting, fishing, the great outdoors and spending time with family and friends. Everyday brings a different challenge to our lives.

We look forward to the opportunity of sharing the Scouting programs with you and your families. Over the next several months I look forward to visiting your units and getting to know you. By working together as a team we can make Scouting the activity that everyone wants to join.

See you next month!
