2019 Polar Bear

Due to inclement weather, Scout’s BSA Polar Bear weekend will be postponed until February 1st thru the 3rd.

The event, which typically promotes winter survival skills and fun activities, has been held in winter weather conditions before. But after last weekend’s snowstorm (January 11-13) (which left over 12 inches of snow at Saukenauk Scout Reservation) the gravel roads leading to the camp and in the camp are very dangerous. They are one lane only and extremely snow packed and slippery. After calls from two township road commissioners, who are charged with clearing the access roads to camp, the Ranger, Mike Turner, has agreed that it would put Scouts and their Leaders in danger to try to attend the event.

With more winter weather forecasted and up to 12 more possible inches of snow, roads will likely be impassable. As Mike said, “I really have no place to put any more snow.” Since Scouting focuses not only on survival skills and fun, but also safety, we feel this decision is the best possible one.

Please feel free to contact the Polar Bear Chair, Shelly Hudnut at 217-257-7716 or Staff Advisor, Heather Huebner at 319-316-3144 for questions or concerns.
