National Youth Leadership Training
What is National Youth Leadership Training?
The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a 6-day long program
where scouts learn leadership,
communication, planning, problem-
solving, teamwork, and also participate in fun outdoor challenges
Who may attend?
Participants may be any current or future leader in any Scouting position. Also, to be eligible to attend, they must be at least First Class in rank, thirteen years of age and have completed 8th grade by the opening day of course, or a registered member of a Venturing Crew. Each Scout must also have a working knowledge of camping, hiking, and cooking IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS
and have the written approval of their Scoutmaster/Advisor.
Why attend National Youth Leadership Training?
The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what they must KNOW, and what they must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a
Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.
Participants camp, work, play and learn, living a month in the life of a model troop/ team/crew condensed into an intense week long conference. They experience the stages of team development, practice from a “toolbox” of leadership skills and learn that leadership requires vision, goals, and planning. Participants learn how to be a leading influence in their own unit; discovering resources, methods, games and new skills to make unit meetings, treks and other activities more exciting and worthwhile. They also develop skills that help them emerge as leaders outside their units; at school and in the community.
