Scouting for Food – Bag Distribution
The Mississippi Valley Council of the Scouting America Mississippi Valley Council will be kicking off the annual Scouting for Food drive on the second Saturday in March. The Boy Scouts are asking for the community’s assistance in collecting food items to be donated to local food banks in the Tri-State Area.
On the second Saturday in March, nearly 2,000 Scouts will be going door-to-door to deliver Scouting for Food bags throughout their neighborhoods. Scouts will then return on the third Saturday in March to collect the donated non-perishable food items left outside. All food remains in the community in which it is collected. Please help our Scouts give back to our community.
Types of food needed: Non-perishable items only, preferably canned goods. (Examples: canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned meats, rice, beans, – nothing frozen or in glass containers)
General Tips
- Use the Buddy System
- Don’t start distributing or collecting until 9:00 am
- Call your local Food Pantry to let them know to expect your collection and give an approx. time of delivery
- Wear the Scout Field Uniform
- Turn in the Report Form by the appropriate date
- Don’t forget to log your hours on the Journey to Excellence website
Unit Distribution Tips
- Respect the collection areas of other scouting units. It causes confusion and frustration when a unit expects to distribute and collect only to find out that their area is already done.
- Some units divide their Scout power into two or more groups. If you do this, it is recommended that you take your assigned area and break it into smaller sections for your dens/patrols/groups.
- Place bags on residence doors/doorknobs or halfway hidden under Door Mats. Do not place bags in or on mailboxes. It is against the law.
- Skip apartment units with controlled access and “No Solicitation” rules (unless previous arrangements have been made).
- Collect from private homes only. Do not solicit from grocery stores or other commercial establishments.
